How to work fewer hours and earn more money

Olga Murasev— 22 August 2017 —

Did you ever wonder how you can earn more without working more? I bet you did! I’m going to share a powerful tip with you:

There is no limit to how much money you can earn.

Many of us don’t seem to understand this — and it makes sense. We’ve all been hardwired to believe that we’re destined to work mundane 3 to 5 jobs to be able to earn enough for a living.

If you are just beginning your journey into the incredible world of face painting, I suggest to check out my other posts: “Starting your face painting business. Investments & hidden costs” and “How much should I charge for face painting. Real prices”.

The truth is that there are easy solutions on how to start making more money from your face painting business, without adding more work hours to your schedule, and I’m going to share them with you in this blog post.

In other words, this post is dedicated to the question of how to fairly raise your rates.

In one of the next posts, I will share with you tips on “How to promote yourself and how to get more gigs”.

Get professional training

If you feel that your work has room for improvement, if you really want to stand out from the crowd, if you want to impress your clients and hear “Shut up and take my money!” every time you will be face painting at a gig — invest in professional training.

Shut up and take my money!

Learn from people whose art you love and from those, who have a lot of experience in training face painters.

Professional training will save you plenty of time and money.

You won’t have to spend years on reading endless threads of conversations in face painting groups to find out the answers. You won’t have to waste money on useless tools. And even more than that. An experienced instructor can teach you how to see your mistakes and how to fix them to make your work way better.

When I was planning the International Face Painting School, I wanted to collect all existing information in this industry into one place. I traveled the world with life workshops during 5 years, giving classes in Australia, USA, Israel, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, UK, Russia, Kazakhstan, Italy, Ukraine etc.

The gained experience showed me that I could share a very small amount of information with my students in a couple of days of training, which wasn’t enough for revealing their entire potential. I felt that I could share much more and their improvement can be much greater. That’s how the idea of the School came.

And I must say, I’m quite proud of the results my students are achieving now. 😍 Just take a look:

Purchase professional tools

You will be amazed how much easier it will be to achieve great results when you’ll start using proper high-quality tools. Invest only in professional face painting brushes, paints, sponges etc. It will also help speed up your work without losing the quality.

Pro paint brands: Cameleon, TAG, Wolfe FX, Diamond FX, Kryolan, Global Colours, Face Paints Australia, Mehron Paradise, Superstar, Kryvaline.

Pro brushes brands: Loew Cornell, TAG, Mehron, Cameleon, Superstar.

The difference between paints types, what is a glycerin based paint and what is a wax based one, what brushes brands work better for linework, for one stroke, for blending and for double dip and many other questions regarding pro tools are covered in Part One of the Course.

Practice day🌅 and night🌃

You’ve invested in professional training and purchased best quality tools. What’s next? It’s time to put those in practice! Practice as much as you can, train the steadiness in your hand, train your imagination by following the work of great artists, be part of professional face painting communities, e.g. International Face Painting School OPEN GROUP. Fall in love with the art of face painting and dedicate it as much time and effort as you can.

Tried and tested on myself. As more frequently I’m practicing, as more confident are my strokes and as more creative are my designs.

The math is simple here. If you can do great job fast, you can earn more both on PPF events and on gigs paid per hour, and impress your clients. I can’t tell you how often I’ve heard “Wow! She’s doing such a great job so quickly! She’s a real pro!”.

Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally. It comes from what you do consistently.

Act like a professional

People are more likely to pay more when they see that both the artist and the job look professional. By this, I mean all components of a serious business, from a tidy and full of various supplies kit and nice pictures of your artwork on the menu board, to your outfit.

Here are two examples of paint stations. Which artist would you pay more? 😉

Become famous in your work area

People are more likely to pay to celebrities. Work on your reputation. Develop your online business page, post your artwork there regularly, take lovely pictures of face painted kids, post pictures of happy customers at gigs. Taking selfies with your clients is a great way to promote yourself.

Provide additional value for your customers

A solution of fairly raising the price for a design is to add a bling cluster to it. Make it look pretty and attractive, present it in a lovely accurate folder.

Hire and train help or collaborate with your peers

Collaborating with other artists means that you can redirect gigs to other face painters and get a commission for that. This is a common practice in areas where face painting is popular, but the distances are quite big. For instance, I know that there is a community of face painters in Los Angeles that gets bookings from one well-known face painter. And she is earning great extra money from commissions.
